Hello, my name is Sigit. I work as a researcher at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Research Center for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia, LIPI) since 2006. My research focuses on systematics and alpha-taxonomy of Indonesian bats, with a specific interest in the diversification and biogeographic patterns of bats on a regional scale. I began working on bats in 2001 when I became a member of Matalabiogama in the Faculty of Biology at Gadjah Mada University as the caver. I joined SEABCRU as part of the student support team for the Cave Bat Group in order to enhance my knowledge, broaden my collaborative network, and strengthen existing research collaborations in the region.

I am a Ph.D. candidate at the City College of New York and Graduate Center at CUNY co-advised by Drs. David Lohman and Nancy Simmons.  I graduated from Skidmore College in 2009 with a B.A. in Biology (Integrative), with my primary training in phylogenetics and population genetics on a variety of vertebrate taxa.  My doctoral research aims to produce a species tree of the genus Pteropus and answer questions related to their diversification and distribution throughout Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia and the Philippines.  I will use nascent multilocus statistical phylogeographic methods to reconstruct population histories and examine questions related to the biogeography of flying foxes.

Bat Conservation International created this video to illustrate the ways in which the health of our planet depends upon the environmental services provided by bats. The welfare of global bat populations depends on conservation actions that everyone can take on a daily basis. Bats are often harmed because people believe myths and misinformation that have been spread for centuries. Watch this educational video and join us in saving bats! We hope you find this valuable and use it in your conservation efforts. Please contact BCI (http://batcon.org/index.php/media-and-info/about-bci/contact-bci.html) if you are interested in translating the video for greater use!

Watch on YouTube.
