Purpose:The SEABCRU Small Grants are intended to enhance research and conservation efforts focused on the four SEABCRU research priorities: taxonomy; flying fox conservation; cave bat conservation; and monitoring of forest-dependent bats. In 2008 five grants of $1000 each were awarded.
Proposal Guidelines: Applicants must be conducting research that addresses one of the four research priorities (taxonomy, flying fox conservation, cave bat conservation, and monitoring of forest-dependent bats), and which is to be implemented in South East Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, Vietnam).
Because the research priorities differ in their likely local expense, the awards can be used:
- to complete a project in its entirety;
- as seed money to develop longer-term research;
- for travel relevant to the priorities (e.g. travel to museum collections for taxonomic study).
Proposals can include requests for equipment purchase, research costs and travel. Grants will not provide any funding for indirect costs (overhead costs), principal investigator salary support or student tuition costs, but may include field support salaries. The grant is not intended for travel to meetings or conferences. Joint applications to enable several people to travel to an institute/museum or conduct research are encouraged and preference will be given to applicants with matched funding from other agencies. Project duration should not exceed one year, although each application will be assessed on its own merit.
Awards will be evaluated by external reviewers on the basis of:
- relevance to SEABCRU priorities;
- likely outputs;
- feasibility/logistics.
Eligibility
Funding is available to undergraduate and graduate students, qualified post-doctoral research scientists, and zoological professionals. There are no nationality restrictions, but researchers, and particularly students, from South East Asian countries will be prioritized.
Funding Cycle
Applications for 2009 are to be announced. Grants are limited to a single award per individual each year. Award decisions will be made in mid April 2009 with funds available in late April or early May 2009. Please take this into consideration when planning your project’s start date.
Application Procedure
Researchers should complete the grant application form and submit to Tigga Kingston no later than TBA.
Grant Reporting
Recipients are required to submit a brief report (1-2 pages – single spaced) within three months of completing the project. Project photos particularly those of the recipient in the field will also be required.
